ELM triggering conditions for the integrated modeling of H-mode plasmas

چکیده
Recent advances in the integrated modeling of ELMy H-mode plasmas are presented. A model for the H-mode pedestal and for the triggering of ELMs predicts the height, width, and shape of the H-mode pedestal and the frequency and width of ELMs. Formation of the pedestal and the L-H transition is the direct result of ~ Er × ~ B flow shear suppression of anomalous transport. The periodic ELM crashes are triggered by either the ballooning or peeling MHD instabilities. The BALOO, DCON, and ELITE ideal MHD stability codes are used to derive a new parametric expression for the peeling-ballooning threshold. The new dependence for the peeling-ballooning threshold is implemented in the ASTRA transport code. Results of integrated modeling of DIII-D like discharges are presented and compared with experimental observations. The results from the ideal MHD stability codes are compared with results from the resistive MHD stability code NIMROD.

Integrated Simulation of ELM Energy Loss and Cycle in Improved H-mode Plasmas
The energy loss due to an edge localized mode (ELM) crash and its cycle have been studied by using an integrated transport code with a stability code for peeling-ballooning modes and a transport model of scrape-off-layer (SOL) and divertor plasmas. The integrated code reproduces a series of ELMs with the following characteristics. The ELM energy loss increases with decreasing the collisionality...

We have made two significant discoveries in our recent studies of quiescent H-mode (QH-mode) plasmas in DIII-D. First, we have found that we can control the edge pedestal density and pressure by altering the edge particle transport through changes in the edge toroidal rotation. This allows us to adjust the edge operating point to be close to, but below the ELM stability boundary, maintaining th...

Edge Localised Modes are characteristic of the high performance, H-mode plasmas that are required for the attainment of Q = 10/500MW fusion power in the first phase of ITER operation. The energy released by a type I ELM, in good confinement plasmas, is typically 510% of the plasma stored energy; with low collisionality plasmas at the upper end of the range. Dimensional analysis, experiment and ...
متن کاملPedestal Turbulence Dynamics in ELMing and ELM-free H-mode Plasmas
Measurements of long wavelength density fluctuations in the pedestal region of DIII-D plasmas have revealed several important features of edge instabilities during type I edge localized mode (ELMing) and ELMfree discharges. These features, measured with a 2D array of beam emission spectroscopy channels, include: toroidal field and spatial dependence of two distinct frequency bands (50–150 kHz a...
متن کاملRole of Transport and MHD Stability in Simulations of H-mode Pedestal Development in ELMy Plasmas
This study addresses the development of a scaling of the H-mode pedestal in tokamak plasmas with type I ELMs. In particular, the scaling studies carried out illustrate the dependence of the pedestal properties and the resulting divertor heat load width as a function of plasma elongation and plasma current. H-mode pedestal profiles for DIII-D and Alcator C-Mod tokamaks are considered: DIII-D for...
